Education is the fundamental right of every child. The educational
needs of exceptional children are different from those of the other
children in the society. Archdiocese of Changanacherry has always
stood with the marginalized and has made all attempts to empower them.
In order to fulfill the educational needs of the disabled persons,
the agency planned to start schools for them. ‘Ashabhavan’,
Home for the mentally challenged was the first in this attempt. It
was established in 1973. At present the agency runs 17 schools for
the mentally challenged and 3 for the physically challenged.
Educating the mentally challenged is really a challenging field
and only highly qualified professionals can conduct the programme
successfully. The greatest challenge faced by the agency was the lack
of sufficient number of qualified teachers. Till recently there was
not even a single college offering B Ed(MR) programme in Kerala. At
this era of crisis, His grace Mar Joseph Powathil the Archbishop of
Changanacherry initiated the sprouting of special teacher education
college in the Archdiocese. The college was established in 2006 in
the premises of SJB College of Education as a memorial of the Golden
Jubilee of the Archdiocese of Changanacherry.
The institution is approved by the Govt. of Kerala & RCI and
is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. We are proud to assert
that this is only the second college of special education in Kerala.
Vision & Mission
The vision of the college is to ensure equal educational opportunity
for disabled and to make productive people by focusing on their abilities.
We hope to draw out the potentialities of special children in that
they live independently to the maximum extent possible in an Inclusive,
Barrier free and Right Based society through constant professional
endeavors.
The college educates and trains human resources to enable them to
acquire knowledge and develop competencies and skills to impact education
and training effectively to all children with mental retardation.
The college prepares special teachers as agents of change in our society
to break down the negative attitudes of community towards disability
and moving towards normalization.
